What we found interesting is, unlike the camera shy natives that we encountered in South America, the people of northern India seem eager to have there picture taken with foreigners. Frequently people would approach us--especially Karen--asking to have their picture taken, sometimes with us, other times alone, usually with our camera, but occasionally with their own. Below are several examples.
Some of these photos were taken in one or the other of Srinigar's numerous gardens, some of which date back to the Mughal era.
Despite the area's beauty, there is an obvious toll that the harsh life takes on its people. We were constantly surprised at how much we over-estimated peoples ages. Gulam, the cook on our houseboat is two years younger than Karen.
